Gift for new sidewalk in the park!
The Park District received a gift from the Atlanta Masonic Lodge #165 AF & AM, that made possible a new sidewalk in the main park. It links the park pavilion to the "barn" and to the paved area in front of the bandstand. This should enhance wheelchair access for activities in the park and keep us all out of the mud at times. A new pad was also poured on the east entrance to the "barn". Pictured above, Doug Thompson receives the Masonic Lodge check from Worshipful Master Ron Yeast. Thanks also goes to Mark Sherman and his crew who poured the concrete. Community House Back Ramp Has New Railing!
After 25 years of use, the railing on the wheelchair-accessible ramp to the back door of the Community Building had become a little "shaky"! That has now been replaced with a welded railing built and installed by Nick's Fab Shop from Atlanta. This sturdy, anchored frame should give its users something to hang onto for many years to come. Thanks to the Atlanta Betterment Fund for assisting with the funds for this project! A Back-to-School Movie in the Park planned for this summer!
The Park District may again sponsor a movie in the park sometime in August. The movie will be projected onto a screen at the bandstand and seating will be on the basketball court in front of the bandstand. Please bring your own folding chairs or blankets and enjoy a family movie " under the stars. Free Popcorn will be provided and Back-to-School gift bags will be free for all kids. Starting time will be about 8:30 pm. So, pass the word and bring your family and friends to enjoy an evening in the park! Watch here and our Facebook page for more details. Community Building has a new sign!
Enjoy the Playground Equipment in the park! Thanks to the $25,000 grant received from the State Farm "Cause An Effects" program, and an additional grant through the equipment manufacturer, GameTime, we were able to purchase over $50,000 worth of equipment for half price. The City of Atlanta employees and numerous volunteers worked hard to assemble and install it!
Be sure to take your children or grandchildren to the park to try it out! Click the button below for larger views of the equipment and layout. |

In case you haven't noticed, Xenia Park has a new resident perched there! Over the September 11th weekend of events in downtown, this eagle was carved on site to commemorate this day of great loss to our country. It is an intricate, yet large rendition of our national bird and you should definitely drop by the park downtown to admire it. Tennis Courts - turned back to the Olympia School
The Park District and the Olympia School District have ended the lease for the tennis courts. They have been used and maintained by the Park District for over 40 years, without charge by Olympia. However, the lease did allow either party to terminate with notice. The property is needed by the school district for expansion plans that they have for the Olympia South school.
The tennis courts are now closed and the Park District has no responsibility for them. Be watching for the big changes to take place at this location as the Olympia - South building is expanded! New trees beautify park!
Thanks to assistance from an Atlanta Betterment Fund grant, we've been able to replace the 5 sickly ash trees that were removed from the park. All 5 new trees (about 10' tall) have been planted and are off to a good start. We hope this helps to maintain the park's beauty for generations to come! Carolyn Patton Nuckolls donates art and hall tree! The Park District has received a wonderful donation of 2 art works, a WWI helmet and hall tree from Carolyn Patton Nuckolls. She is the daughter of Dick Patton and these items used to sit in the Memorial Home when it was used as a residence by her family in the 1930s. We are so thankful for this gift and are proud to have those items placed in about the same locations that they originally set! Pictures can be viewed by clicking here, but also stop by and enjoy them in person.
